Abstract
Le nombre de femmes à la tête de leur ménage a plus que doublé entre 1971 et 1981 au Canada. Cet article examine dans quelle mesure cette augmentation est due à des modifications dans la structure des ménages (par exemple, l'augmentation du nombre de familles monoparentales) et dans quelle mesure elle est due à l'apparition en 1981 d'un nouveau concept pour identifier la personne à la tête du ménage (par exemple, dans les ménages unifamiliaux de familles principales époux-épouse sans autres personnes, plus de 340 000 épouses se sont déclarées soutien de ménage en 1981, alors qu'elles n'auraient pu se déclarer chef de ménage selon la définition de 1971). L'existence de fortes différences interprovinciales permet de supposer que l'impact du changement de concept varie en fonction des caractéristiques des ménages, des époux et des épouses.
