Marriage Form and Duration of Postmarital Co-Residence With Parents in Rural China: Evidence from Songzi

Abstract
This paper uses data from a survey in Songzi county of Hubei province to analyze the relationship between a couple’s marriage form and their duration of postmarital co-residence with their parents. The results show that, after controlling for important factors, a couple’s marriage form has a significant influence on the duration of their postmarital co-residence with their parents. Among couples, the duration of co-residence increases in the order: virilocal marriage, institutional type and contingent type uxorilocal marriages. Moreover, for all couples, the first five years after marriage is the period with the highest hazard of ending this postmarital co-residence status with their parents. Causes and social implications of this phenomenon are also discussed.
