Abstract
Les propos qui suivent doivent être vus comme un témoignage d'un professeur-chercheur qui a vu grandir l'Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, une institution « perdue » dans le Bouclier canadien au milieu de cette région décrite comme une oasis tempérée en milieu nordique. Je puis dire que j'y étais dès les débuts; et même, j'étais là pour les premiers cours jamais dispensés par l'Institution. En effet, en juillet 1969 l'UQAC m'accueillait comme professeur. Deux mois plus tard, les cours commençaient, je devenais le premier directeur du module de géographie, dans la première, et la seule, université établie dans la région. J'ai vu naître et grandir l'institution. Je l'ai vu se développer et j'ai vu, et je vois toujours, quel impact cette maison de haut savoir a eu dans la région et dans la population. J'ai pu voir aussi comment elle rayonne dans le monde. En entrée de jeu des discussions qui vont suivre, je veux présenter un témoignage bien incomplet et bien subjectif mais, je l'espère, éclairant. Trois points seront abordés: enseignement et recherche, impacts économiques et sociaux, université et diversité.
