Abstract

Malgré son statut subordonné, le français est présent en Israël à la faveur de contextes sociaux dans lesquels la langue est autrement perçue et pratiquée ; il évolue en fonction de différents modèles sociolinguistiques. Le français est ici considéré en termes de « francophonies plurielles », tandis que les aspects sociolinguistiques et les préoccupations sociologiques sont mis en relation. Nous recherchons une éventuelle cohérence à l’apparente « cacophonie de francophonies ». Sur la base d’une série de travaux réalisés depuis les années 1980 et jusqu’à récemment, nous étudions l’évolution des modèles majeurs de la langue française et de ses locuteurs : la langue vernaculaire ethnoculturelle des premiers immigrants d’Afrique du Nord, le développement du français en franbreu ; la formation d’une interlangue français/hébreu chez les apprenants hébréophones ; la transformation de la langue française en marqueur de la nouvelle diaspora transnationale chez les immigrants des années 1990 et 2000. Pour chaque modèle, nous présentons une description sociologique des milieux pertinents ainsi que leurs modes de pratique du français. La dernière section propose une vue d’ensemble de cette présence des francophonies, et ce qu’elle nous apprend sur la société israélienne.
