L'objectif de mon étude était d'évaluer la contribution des bactéries à l'assimilation d'azote (pN) en surface et au maximum sub-superficiel de chlorophylle (SCM) dans l'océan Arctique canadien afin d'évaluer les impacts possible de cette prise sur le phytoplancton et la production primaire nouvelle telle qu'estimée par le /-ratio (i.e., la proportion de la prise totale d'azote qui est comblée par de l'azote allochtone tel le nitrate). Deux méthodes permettant d'estimer la pN bactérienne ont aussi été comparées: le fractionnement de taille (SM) et la méthode par inhibition des bactéries (IM). Considérant les valeurs obtenues par PIM, qui a semblé être la méthode la plus appropriée dans la zone d'étude, les bactéries ont utilisé surtout l'azote inorganique et peu d'azote organique. L'ammonium (NH/) a été la principale source d'azote pour les bactéries, dont l'avantage compétitif sur le phytoplancton leur a permis d'en être les principaux consommateurs. Malgré la faible lumière qui y persiste, le SCM n'avantage pas les bactéries puisque leur pN est proportionnelle à l'activité phytoplanctonique tant en surface qu'au SCM. L'impact de la soustraction de la pN bactérienne lors de l'estimation du/^ratio est généralement faible mais varie selon la station échantillonnée et dépend de la disponibilité du NH4+ dans l'environnement ainsi que de la proportion de la pN bactérienne totale comblée par le NH4+, le nitrate et l'urée. Cette étude démontre que les bactéries sont d'importants consommateurs d'azote et que cette contribution doit être quantifiée afin d'interpréter correctement la mesure du /-ratio et d'améliorer notre compréhension des cycles de l'azote et du carbone dans l'océan Arctique canadien.
