This work performs a comparative welf
\nare analysis of two types of entry 
\nregulation in a duopolistic retail market: number of licenses and minimum 
\ndistance between stores. In a linear (Hotelling) market we show that a 
\nminimum distance rule is beneficial for the consumers and disadvantageous 
\nfor the firms when demand is sufficiently 
\ninelastic. The distance rule that 
\nmaximises social welfare 
\nis one quarter of the mark
\net under which firms will 
\nbe located at the quartiles. Those loca
\ntions are also optimal under regulated 
\nprices. This analysis, which is not yet considered in the literature, is 
\nmotivated by a change of entry regulat
\nion in the drugstore market in the 
\nSpanish region of Navarre.
