Les incendies de forêt représentent un danger majeur pour les forêts méditerranéennes, impactant les communautés végétales et animales, les activités de gestion forestière, la valeur des ressources et des biens, et même les modes de vie. Le projet Protect, dont le chef de fil était la Province de Macerata (Italie), avait pour objectif de créer et de partager un modèle commun et intégré pour la prévention des feux de forêt en région méditerranéenne. L’un des plus importants résultats du projet Protect, a été l’élaboration d’un modèle destiné à prédire le risque journalier d'incendie de forêt, à travers l’adaptation spécifique de l’Indice Forêt Météo canadien (IFM) aux conditions locales. Pendant la saison des feux, les gestionnaires des feux doivent prendre chaque jour des décisions concernant le dimensionnement et la localisation des moyens alloués. L’adaptation locale de l’IFM peut apporter une aide utile avec des indications détaillées pour la prévention et la lutte contre les incendies.
