Abstract
The political thought of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, according to some Trudeau scholars, is contradictory; but could this lack of consistency simply be due to our attempt to fit him exclusively into the mould of a procedural liberal when his early written material shows evidence of classical republican influences? In this essay, the author isolates those elements of Trudeau’s early political thought to show how they fit into a classical republican paradigm. In so doing, the author argues, some of the dissonances and inconsistencies in his thought can be attenuated, and the overarching trajectory of his ideas—which are profoundly relevant for contemporary politics—can be more clearly conceived.
