Os efeitos da toxicidade de duas espécies químicas de alumínio (Al) - monomérica e polimérica - sobre o crescimento de plantas de milho, Zea mays L. (Poaceae), foram estudados em solução nutritiva de baixo valor de força iônica. Com o aumento da atividade de Al em solução nutritiva, houve redução da produção de massa seca da parte aérea e do comprimento da raiz principal. Os efeitos da toxicidade de Al foram mais intensos nas raízes do que na parte aérea. As raízes laterais também foram sensíveis ao Al. Com o aumento da atividade de Al, houve redução nos valores de comprimento. A redução do comprimento foi de 80% nos 2 cm iniciais no sentido da base para o ápice da raiz principal na atividade de 3,9 µM de Al em relação ao tratamento sem Al. As duas espécies de Al apresentaram nível de toxicidade semelhante
