Abstract
La question de l’existence d’une société civile mondiale est autant le fait des politologues en mal de thématiques de recherche attrayantes, que des décideurs internationaux qui vilipendent les troubles créés par « ces empêcheurs de tourner en rond » ou, à l’inverse, qui louent les mérites démocratiques d’une société civile active sur le plan mondial. Autrement dit, comme beaucoup de questions de recherche en science politique, celle que nous avons posée comporte une dimension normative importante. L’objectif de ce chapitre est de tenter d’y répondre en adoptant un point de vue analytique. Nous nous y efforcerons en précisant les sens des mots utilisés, puis en retraçant les éléments qui ont suscité l’engouement pour cette société civile mondiale. Finalement, nous verrons que cette celle-ci correspond davantage à un artefact, une vue de l’esprit, qu’à un phénomène social directement observable.
