Abstract

Conventional sulphuric acid plants require water for their cooling systems. Cooling is required to reject surplus heat not recovered as steam. Reducing the water consumption lowers the cost of sourcing reliable supplies of clean water as well as the cost associated with treating effluent streams. It also helps improve the sustainability of the acid plant operation by reducing the impact on surrounding communities. This paper focuses on two broad categories of water-saving options:
