Abstract
L’analyse se situe autour de 1968, année charnière qui a vu, entre autres, la création des Belles-Soeurs de Michel Tremblay et l’émergence du « nouveau » théâtre québécois. Prenant l’envers de cette vague de fond du répertoire national, cet article s’intéresse plutôt à l’un des principaux opposants désignés du devenir théâtral québécois : le Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, alors sous la direction récente de Jean-Louis Roux (1966-1982). Trois études de cas (Pygmalion, Tartuffe et Le soir des rois) viennent approfondir le projet scénique du metteur en scène Roux. Ce projet est fondé sur des relectures du répertoire européen qui entrent en dialogue avec les débats sociaux de l’heure tout en s’inscrivant paradoxalement dans une histoire avortée du théâtre au Québec, dont Roux cherche à redresser la mémoire.
