Les tables de mortalité par cause permettent d'isoler l'impact d'une cause de décès particulière en comparant l'espérance de vie qui résulterait d'une table dont est absente une cause spécifique, de celle qui est obtenue à partir d'une table de mortalité générale. Parmi les problèmes que soulève ce type d'analyse, il y a celui des limites et de la signification de l'indicateur « espérance de vie » utilisé dans la comparaison. L'auteur étudie cette question en faisant appel à un modèle logistique de l'évolution des risques de décès par âge.
