1267 Learning Objectives 1. Review the mechanisms of ionizing radiation induced DNA injury and DNA repair. 2. Describe various assays that can be used to quantify DNA injury at diagnostic doses. 3. Review highlights from the extensive literature on pharmacologic radiation protection with a focus on antioxidant radiation protection. 4. Discuss preliminary validation of antioxidant radiation protection via the above assays in the known literature and describe premedication approaches appropriate to nuclear medicine. Pharmacologic radiation protection is a well studied field. In particular, the radioprotective properties of antioxidants have been well characterized in a literature that spans through the cold war. Despite the extensive available knowledge on antioxidant radiation protection, we do not routinely premedicate patients prior to diagnostic exams involving ionizing radiation. Our exhibit reviews the major principles of pharmacologic radiation protection that have been described in the literature with a focus on antioxidants. We highlight modern assays capable of quantifying DNA damage at diagnostic doses and how they might be used to conduct the first in vivo human clinical trials of pharmacologic radiation protection. Dissemination of this knowledge within the nuclear medicine community may encourage the greater clinical use of antioxidant radiation protection and promote appropriate research activity within our scientific community.
