Chaque année, une part significative des dépenses gouvernementales est consacrée au sport de niveau professionnel ou amateur. Certains analystes affirment que ces investissements contribuent fortement au succès d’un pays aux Jeux olympiques. Nous présentons une analyse économétrique visant à estimer l’effet causal de l’investissement public dans le sport sur le nombre de médailles remportées par un pays. Nous utilisons des modèles de comptage avec effets fixes et variable instrumentale. Selon les spécifications retenues, l’élasticité du nombre de médailles obtenues par un pays lors de Jeux olympiques d’été par rapport aux investissements publics qu’il a effectués varie entre 0,23 et 0,38.
