Dans la Vengeance Raguidel, Raoul de Houdenc s’appuie sur les topoï du répertoire narratif et sur la connaissance qu’en a son public, pour les mettre à l’épreuve à travers le principe d’enchâssement. Le motif de la vengeance fait ainsi office de récit cadre pour ces narrations confiées aux protagonistes, sans que ces récits, même le Lai du Cort Mantel et le Chevalier à l’Épée qui ont une existence autonome, puissent se détacher de la diégèse.
