G.S. tient à le rappeler dès le début de son ouvrage : la maison des Babenberg est bien connue de tous les Autrichiens, qui en apprenaient l'histoire à l'école, et pour cause.Depuis la fin du Xe, jusqu'au milieu du XIIIe siècle, les Babenberg sont en charge de la marcha orientalis, ou Ostarrîchi, un territoire situé sur le moyen Danube, depuis l'Enns jusqu'au Wienerwald, embryon de la future Autriche.Ils jouent un rôle déterminant dans le développement de cet ensemble politique qui, d'abord simple marche orientale sujette au duc de Bavière, constituée en vue de sa défense, devient un duché autonome, tout en faisant l'objet d'une extension territoriale considérable.Dans son dernier ouvrage, G.S. nous fait le récit de cette histoire, qui est aussi bien celle d'une maison aristocratique que celle d'un ensemble politique qui connaît une évolution singulière et qui en devient une réalité politique majeure de l'Occident médiéval, particulièrement sous les Habsbourg.
