Abstract
Formalnie rzecz biorąc, Izrael nie jest jedyną oficjalną ojczyzną Żydów na świecie. W azjatyckiej części Rosji, na Syberii, nadal istnieje Żydowski Obwód Autonomiczny \nw Birobidżanie. Począwszy od 1928 r. Związek Radziecki przeznaczył na osiedlenie Żydów terytorium większe niż Belgia i Holandia razem wzięte i znacznie większe niż Izrael, usytuowane ponad 6 tys. km na wschód od Moskwy, wzdłuż granicy rosyjsko-chińskiej, pomiędzy 48 i 40 stopniem szerokości północnej, gdzie klimat i warunki są podobne do Ontario i Michigan. Wierząc, że Żydzi rosyjscy, podobnie jak inne mniej-szości narodowe, zasługują na własne terytorium, reżim sowiecki zdecydował ustanowić terytorium, które w 1934 r. stało się Żydowskim Obwodem Autonomicznym. Ideą było utworzenie Nowego Syjonu – jako przeciwwagi do Palestyny – gdzie „proletariacko- \n-żydowska kultura”, oparta na języku jidysz, mogła się rozwijać. W rzeczywistości ustanowienie Żydowskiego Obwodu Autonomicznego było w pierwszym rzędzie oficjal-nym uznaniem narodowego terytorium Żydów od czasów starożytnych: „Pierwszego Izraela”. Ale historia tego regionu była tragiczna i eksperyment nie powiódł się. Jednakże odnowione dzisiaj istnienie Birobidżanu i odrodzenie żydowskiego życia w po-sowieckim Żydowskim Obwodzie Autonomicznym są nie tylko ciekawym spadkiem po sowieckiej narodowej polityce, ale też po rozpadzie Związku Radzieckiego, i religijnym odrodzeniu na świecie; tym samym stanowią interesujące studium przypadku do badań niektórych ambitnych problemów geograficznych i stosunków międzyetnicznych.
