Questo saggio propone una nuova lettura dei Ricordi di Giovanni Morelli, un’opera composita e funzionale in cui l’autore intesse un ritratto estremamente potente di sé, che diventa tanto più deciso quanto più contrasta con quello del padre Pagolo, e che si concretizza chiaramente negli ammaestramenti rivolti ai figli. Per riuscire dove il proprio genitore ha fallito, nella parte centrale del testo, Giovanni si consacra alla loro educazione e alla salvaguardia del patrimonio familiare, offrendo consigli pratici che sono saldamente legati alla propria conoscenza, esperienza ed eredità mercantile. È esattamente qui che riesce a creare un’immagine esemplare di sé, sia come padre onniscente, sia come abile mercante e a superare quella del genitore e della sua gente Morella. Operando una riscrittura attiva del passato e del presente, ed insegnando a guardare al futuro, lo scrittore realizza un lavoro affascinante, la cui genesi va ricercata in un’inconfessata e sottile condanna delle cattive scelte del padre e in un reale intento pedagogico, morale e autocelebrativo.
