Abstract Abbreviations for fish names are used by fisheries biologists throughout the data life cycle, especially field data collection and entry, sharing, and reporting. However, use of nonstandard abbreviation systems across North America hinders data collection, sharing, and communication among agencies, programs, universities, and other data providers. An ideal abbreviation system would yield unique codes for all species, while being intuitive, memorable, and stable over time, as well as providing for a wide range of scenarios such as naming subspecies, hybrids, and unidentified species of a known taxon. A standard abbreviation system that meets these ideals was developed using a defined rule set and implemented for fishes of the continental United States, Canada, and Mexico. Standard abbreviations were developed for 3,875 species, in addition to their respective genera and families. Use of the standard abbreviation system can improve data integrity by reducing worker training, use of ambiguous codes, and misinterpretation of shared data. Abbreviations facilitate faster data recording and entry, as well as brevity in writing reports and creating tables. The standard abbreviation system will be made available online for widespread use. Los biólogos pesqueros abrevian el nombre de los peces durante el ciclo de vida de los datos, especialmente en las partes de colecta y captura de datos de campo, intercambio y reportes. Sin embargo el uso de sistemas no estandarizados de abreviación a lo largo de los EE.UU., tiende a entorpecer la colecta, intercambio, y comunicación entre agencias, programas, universidades y otros organismos que manejan datos. Un sistema ideal de abreviación, debiera producir códigos únicos para todas las especies, debe ser intuitivo, memorable, estable en el tiempo, y también probar ser útil bajo distintos escenarios, como nombrar subespecies, híbridos y especies no identificadas de un taxón conocido. En este estudio se desarrolló un sistema estándar de abreviación que cumple con estos requisitos, valiéndose de un set definido de reglas que fue aplicado a peces de los EE.UU., Canadá y México. Se desarrollaron abreviaciones estándar para 3,875 especies, adicionalmente a sus respectivos géneros y familias. El uso de un sistema estándar de abreviaciones puede mejorar la integridad de los datos, reduciendo el tiempo de entrenamiento de los trabajadores, el uso de códigos ambiguos y la mala interpretación de datos compartidos. Las abreviaciones facilitan un registro y captura más ágiles así como también brevedad en reportes escritos y creación de tablas. Este sistema estándar de abreviación será puesto en línea para ampliar su utilización. Cependant, l'utilisation de systèmes d'abréviations non standard en Amérique du Nord entrave la récolte, le partage et la communication de données entre les organismes, programmes, universités et autres fournisseurs de données. Un système d'abréviation idéal présenterait des codes uniques pour toutes les espèces, tout en étant intuitif, mémorable et stable dans le temps, et couvrirait un large spectre d'hypothèses, telles que le nom des sous-espèces, les hybrides et les espèces non identifiées d'un taxon connu. En utilisant un ensemble défini de critères, un système d'abréviation standard qui répond à ces idéaux a été développé et mis en œuvre pour les poissons de la partie continentale des États-Unis, Canada et Mexico. Des abréviations standard ont été développées pour 3,875 espèces, en plus de leurs familles et genres respectifs.
