Abstract
Dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, la généralisation du travail salarié des mères, dans un contexte de transition vers une économie de services et de précarisation du travail, est une mutation socio-économique majeure, dont les répercussions – y compris sur le plan culturel – commencent à peine à être scrutées par les historiennes et les historiens. Dans cet article, nous proposons d’exposer le potentiel heuristique des récits de travail domestique rémunéré pour comprendre les transformations contemporaines du service domestique au Québec. L’approche biographique nous permet de saisir de façon simultanée et compréhensive à la fois les mécanismes sociohistoriques de refoulement d’un grand nombre de femmes vers des emplois domestiques ou associés au care au cours des dernières décennies du XXe siècle, ainsi que différents enjeux identitaires découlant de leur rapport au salariat domestique.
