Denis Thouard 1Sans avoir atteint la renommée de son jeune frère Alexandre, Wilhelm von Humboldt ne fut pas un inconnu.Il séjourna à Paris à maintes reprises, dont de 1797 à 1801, y noua de nombreux contacts, et demeura, une fois rentré en Prusse, en échange continus avec le milieu parisien à travers la médiation active d'Alexandre.Or la réception de ses idées cessa peu après sa mort en 1835 pour ne reprendre que plus d'un siècle après, dans le contexte de la critique du paradigme structuraliste de la fin des années soixante du dernier siècle.C'est à l'histoire de cette relation changeante que s'est attachée S.B. dans un travail qui constitue un modèle d'étude de cas de « transfert culturel » et plus largement « savant » en ce qu'il dit finalement plus sur les motifs de l'accueil ou de l'indifférence que sur l'œuvre humboldtienne elle-même.
