Les lampes fluocompactes sont de plus en plus utilisées dans le monde à cause de leur faible consommation énergétique et de leur durée de vie accrue. Cependant, ces lampes contiennent du mercure, un élément dangereux parce qu’il peut pénétrer dans les écosystèmes, bioaccumuler et bioamplifier jusqu’à devenir toxique pour les êtres vivants au sommet de la chaîne alimentaire. Il faut donc mettre en place des systèmes de récupération des lampes fluocompactes afin de diminuer l’apport de mercure dans l’environnement et ses conséquences sur la santé. Parallèlement, au Québec, la Politique québécoise de gestion des matières résiduelles 1998-2008 vise un taux de mise en valeur de 60 % des résidus domestiques dangereux, dont les LFC font partie. L’information aux citoyens ainsi que la mise en place de structures de récupération et de mise en valeur des LFC, entre autres par l’entremise de la responsabilité des producteurs est une avenue prometteuse pour atteindre ces objectifs.
