Abstract
O Programa Saúde da Família (PSF) surgiu como uma estratégia de reorientação das práticas sanitárias no Brasil e a inclusão da saúde bucal, com a inserção do Cirurgião-dentista nessa equipe, constituíram um avanço nas ações de saúde na atenção básica, incorporando o conceito de saúde bucal como um componente da saúde em seu sentido mais amplo. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar a situação da saúde bucal no Brasil e as atribuições do Cirurgião-dentista no PSF, assim como, abordar a forma como a Odontologia é exercida no setor público. Os dados mostraram que a prática odontológica é individualizada, centrada na doença, tecnologicamente avançada, mas excludente e socialmente caótica. A articulação entre as Instituições de Ensino Superior e os Serviços Públicos de Saúde repercute, de algum modo, na formação de recursos humanos para atender a essa demanda, mas ainda há a necessidade da formação de profissionais com ênfase na promoção, prevenção, recuperação e reabilitação da saúde e da educação continuada para profissionais formados anteriormente à inserção das ações de saúde bucal no PSF.
