Five hours’ New York jet lag and Cayce Pollard wakes in Camden Town to the dire and evercircling wolves of disrupted circadian rhythm. It is that flat and spectral non-hour, awash in limbic tides, brainstem stirring fitfully, flashing inappropriate reptilian demands for sex, food, sedation, all of the above. She knew, now, absolutely, hearing the white noise that is London, that Damien’s theory of jet lag is correct: that her mortal soul is leagues behind her, being reeled in on some ghostly umbilical down the vanished wake of the plane that brought her here, hundreds of thousands of feet above the Atlantic. Souls can’t move that quickly, and are left behind, and must be awaited, upon arrival, like lost luggage. - William Gibson William Gibson has always had a knack for identifying the ways in which life has changed in the digital age. (This is, after all, the author who, for better and worse, coined the term 'cyberspace' while still writing on an old IBM selectric typewriter). More, perhaps, than any other writer contemporary sci-fi writer, Gibson is able to cut through the superficial and identify those technologies and movements which have produced genuine changes in the way in which people live. In this, he's actually quite akin to Hannah Arendt; Arendt who, in her probings of the history of innovation, picked out the lowly telescope as marking perhaps the most profound changes in the human condition, as for the first time a fundamental gap was introduced between human presence and human knowledge. Gibson too was able to cut through all the flash of contemporary cyberculture and instead pointed to that simplest and most mundane effect of contemporary life - jet lag – and note how truly revolutionary a phenomenon it is.
