Abstract
La prévalence du tabagisme chez les jeunes reste un sujet d'actualité, même si les moyens pour en suivre l'évolution de façon scientifique ne sont en général pas disponibles. Les données de l'Enquête sociale et de santé de 1992-1993, malgré certaines lacunes par rapport aux anciens fumeurs, nous permet de suivre les tendances depuis l'Enquête Santé Québec de 1987. Il se dégage que dans les générations 1965 et 1970, pour lesquelles l'information a dû être estimée partiellement, la tendance à la baisse du tabagisme avant 25 ans, tant chez les hommes que chez les femmes, semble se maintenir. Le facteur principal qui explique, pour ces générations, des niveaux de tabagisme féminin supérieurs à ceux des hommes est l'adoption plus faible de ce comportement en bas âge pour les hommes. Cet élément est toutefois compensé en bonne partie par une propension plus grande chez les femmes à abandonner la cigarette. L'ensemble des résultats nous amène à prévoir que les prochaines générations d'hommes et de femmes auront des habitudes tabagiques similaires et que seul le comportement avant 20 ans les différenciera.
