Il decennio intercorso tra la pubblicazione della novella Il Signore della Nave (1916) e la trionfale messa in scena della Sagra del Signore della Nave (1925) — opera con la quale si inaugurò l'attività di Pirandello capocomico — individua un contesto cronologico ed evolutivo dell'arte pirandelliana, decisivo e culminante, che vede da un lato il progressivo ridursi della produzione novellistica e dall'altro si volge alla elaborazione degli atti unici. A partire dalla constatazione che nulla o quasi della novella viene tralasciato nell'adattamento teatrale e mediante l'esame delle differenze strutturali — nonché dei mutamenti più o meno significativi riguardanti lo sviluppo della parte argomentativa— si evidenzia il particolare rapporto dialettico che lega le due opere: quasi spazio in cui il rincorrersi e il nascondersi a vicenda, ma anche il coincidere, di «corpo» e «ombra» vengono mostrati in atto.
