Abstract
SUMMARY History of retinal detachment surgery has been always surrounded by a thread of mystery and the most clangourous surgical failures until the revolutionary and outstanding contributions of Swiss retina specialist, Jules Gonin at the beginning of the XX century. In this review we tried to describe the most notorious contributions of retinal detachment surgery in known history from the XVIII century in Louis XIV France, showing ridiculous empiric treatments until the breakthrough made by Gonin in the first quarter of the last century.
