Benoît Lacroix, né le 8 septembre 1915 à Saint-Michel de Bellechasse (au Québec), est un témoin privilégié de l’évolution des études médiévales au Canada. Après une licence en théologie obtenue en 1941 au Collège des Dominicains d’Ottawa, il complète un doctorat en sciences médiévales à l’Institut pontifical de Toronto en 1951, alors qu’il a déjà commencé à enseigner à l’Institut d’études médiévales de Montréal, alors nouvellement associé à l’université de Montréal.
