La historia del chabolismo en Espana se remonta al exodo rural que se dearrollo espectacularmente en los anos sesenta y desde planteamientos poco elaborados o rigurosos, suele establec erse una vinculacion directa entre el chabolismo y las formas de vida que se entienden propias de minorias como la gitana. En paralelo y como consecuencia de la falta de oportunidades laborales, propiciada por la evolucion de un sistema productivo que va copando actividades como la recogida de carton, chatarra, muebles viejos, etcetera, se ha ido produciendo un alarmante incremento del trafico de drogas en algunos nucleos. En Madrid se han venido llevando a cabo actuaciones que erradicar esta problematica; sin embargo, pese a ello, todavia que dan en la region unas seiscientas chabolas, todo ello sin tener en cuenta la Canada Real Galiana, cuyas edificaciones no entrarian dentro de la definicion de chabola, al considerarse estas como infra viviendas levantadas de forma ilegal en terrenos publicos.
