Abstract
Abstract. - Two approaches of forest management, one in Europa and another in North America, apply to urban and suburban forests. In Europa the patterns which characterize the interaction between forests and towns are complex and are not always the cause of the decline of forest ecosystems (cf. examples of Bruxelles and Berlin). In North America, the contradiction between production and conservation forestry are close to the opposition between completely artificial urban forests (example of Québec) and ancient seminatural woods which exist near the town center (example natural park "Scarpe-Escaut" (North of France), from 1970 to nowadays, emphasized the new functions of suburban forests.
