Abstract
Joseph Howe (1804-1873) is well-known in Nova Scotian history for his contributions as a printer, journalist, advocate for freedom of the press and responsible government, and politician. Less well-known are Howe’s extensive travel accounts, written during his “Rambles” throughout Nova Scotia, and published as newspaper articles between 1828 and 1831. Enthusiastically, romantically and intelligently commenting on people, places, and things, Howe’s Rambles capture Nova Scotian landscapes and society at a unique moment in time – one of rapid change due to industrialization, population growth, and new technologies.
