Se estudió la etnoecología de fauna y cacería en un área de conservación comunitaria. La cacería local fue prohibida en 2004 en apoyo a actividades de conservación. Con el objetivo de evaluar la importancia pasada de lacacería y las consecuencias de su prohibición, entre 2009-2010 se realizó: observación participativa, entrevistas, análisis de registros de caza y ejercicios de identificación de especies. Antes de su prohibición, la cacería fueimportante para el sustento chinanteco y ésta puede ser conceptualizada en términos de la praxis (conducta y práctica de caza), corpus (cuerpo de conocimientos sobre fauna y ambiente) y kosmos (sistema de creenciasque está dialogando con los cazadores, incluyendo al dueño de los animales y el nagüalismo). Los informantes reportaron al menos 32 especies que se cazaban y usaban antes de la prohibición, principalmente como alimento(84,4%), medicina (15,6%) o artesanía (12,5%). Las principales estrategias de caza eran el acecho (57,9%) y expediciones usando perros (36,8%). Los cazadores con perros tuvieron un conocimiento más amplio acerca dela fauna, narrativas tradicionales y una mayor conexión con el dueño de los animales, quien era un mecanismo tradicional que regulaba la cacería antes de su prohibición. En la comunidad, parte importante de las relacionessociales se mantenían a través de la cacería, y los adolescentes adquirían habilidades de trabajo y conocimiento ambiental mientras aprendían a cazar. Así, la prohibición ha tenido impactos sobre el conocimiento tradicional,relaciones sociales y subsistencia. De acuerdo a los pobladores, esta prohibición fue introducida por instituciones ajenas a la comunidad sin una evaluación del estado de las poblaciones animales y está interrelacionada con mecanismos globales de conservación de Mercado que afectan ecologías humanas a escala local.
