Abstract
The article explores the 1918 painting Halifax Harbour at sunset, which was completed by the British artist Harold Gilman. Particular focus is given to how the artwork was commissioned by the Canadian government in an effort to document the harbor in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during wartime. Additional topics discussed include insights on Gilman's artistic process, how the artwork was inspired by his travels to Canada and details on the Canadian War Records organization.
