Abstract
La traduction par Mary Sidney Herbert, comtesse de Pembroke, de la tragédie Marc Antoine de Robert Garnier est un facteur déterminant dans la notion critique d'un cercle de Pembroke, cercle sinon véritable, du moins virtuel, réunissant des esprits semblables. Cet article cherche ailleurs l'origine de l’intérêt de la comtesse pour la pièce française. Il s'agit alors d'analyser la traduction en soi et dans le contexte du volume où elle a paru pour la première fois en 1592, afin de mieux comprendre les démarches de la traductrice dans le contexte de sa vie et de son oeuvre. Également en question sont les liens intellectuels qu'elle a maintenus avec le protestantisme français, incarné par Philippe de Mornay, en même temps qu'elle poursuivait un projet particulièrement personnel qui rendait ces liens instables, fragiles.
