Moncton a accueilli du 3 au 5 septembre 1999 la VIIIe edition de la conference des chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement des pays ayant le francais en commun, plus connue sous le nom de Sommet de la Francophonie. Ce Sommet, qui a lieu tous les deux ans, a pour objectif d'etablir les grandes lignes de cooperation entre les pays membres de l'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), actuellement au nombre de 52. Dans cet article, l'A. presente les activites et les preparatifs du Sommet, decrit son deroulement, et fait le bilan de ses retombees sur la ville de Moncton, sur l'Acadie en general, ainsi que sur la presence de la langue et de la culture francophones a l'echelle du globe
