Le pavillon des miroirs, roman autobiographique, présente un peintre écrivant sur son passé et imaginant un avenir meilleur. Au bord de la dépression, évoquant son enfance au Brésil, pays trop coloré et tumultueux, l’exilé se réfugie dans une pyramide et dans une attitude prostrée face à la nécessaire assimilation à un pays d’accueil jamais nommé. Mettant en mouvement non seulement deux attitudes opposées (envers le passé et le futur) mais aussi deux topoï (le Brésil, pays d’origine versus le Canada, pays d’accueil), les figures du clown et du masque sont développées tout au long de ce roman sur l’exil d’un artiste. En effet, Kokis file les métaphores annoncées par l’illustration-couverture et peint des figures de clowns exubérants et choquants, figures d’altérité rejetées par le monde qui les entoure. Parallèlement, les passages sur l’exil tendent à faire naître une figure plus fragile et subtile, celle du masque, discrète figure de l’Autre assimilé. Dans tous les cas, c’est l’Autre, le rejeté, le paria qui est présent et qui, dans ses différences, décrit le sentiment d’étrangeté de l’auteur. C’est par ce tourbillon de paradoxes que Kokis tente de représenter sa théorie artistique ainsi que la manière dont il perçoit la représentation de l’identité.
