Lessons learned creating a gay men’s health festival targeting community wellness instead of individual HIV prevention in Ottawa, Canada

Abstract
HIV transmission rates among MSM are rising in Ottawa, Canada. Within MSM health promotion, interventions focused exclusively on individual HIV transmission return diminishing positive behavioral change. Canadian health interventions increasingly attempt to move beyond the individual, emphasizing the social determinants of population health outcomes. As an ASO creating a MSM health festival, the challenge was to engage participants around social factors that influence the overall wellness of their communities. This presentation reviews the design and implementation of SNOWBLOWER, “a winter festival for guys into guys,” in 2007 and 2008. Participant surveys during and after the festival allowed organizers to determine how well programming addressed self-assessed community needs. Evaluations provided information on effective and ineffective methods of translating MSM health theory into enticing community events.
