Cet article propose une double lecture des quatre discours sur la colère prononcés à l'Académie du Palais en présence d'Henri III en insistant sur leur visée didactique. Il s'agit de montrer comment ils mettent en œuvre une pédagogie par l'exemple qui contribue à former un monarque éloquent aussi bien qu'un prince apte à gouverner. En effet, les harangues destinées à Henri III se posent d'abord comme des modèles d'art oratoire à imiter. Elles mettent l'accent sur l'invention, la disposition, tout en faisant appel à la mémoire du prince par les vastes connaissances qui y sont convoquées. Or, ce sont justement les trois parties de la rhétorique qui relèvent d'une «éloquence royale» selon Amyot. Ensuite, par le biais des nombreux exempla historiques, les discours renvoient au Prince l'image d'un roi idéal et l'incitent à suivre cette voie. Les orateurs, tout en axant leur enseignement sur la vertu afin de former un roi juste qui gouvernera avec prudence, n'hésitent pas à prodiguer des conseils politiques au passage. Les discours sur la colère à l'usage d'Henri III favorisent donc la diffusion d'un savoir qui serait propre à la conduite de l'état et à l'art de bien dire, nous permettant, du coup, de les envisager comme étant à la fois des manuels de rhétorique et des miroirs des princes.
