Abstract
Depuis les années 1970, de nombreuses recherches qualitatives publiées en anglais tentent de rendre compte et d’analyser la vie en institution d’hébergement pour personnes âgées. Ces recherches portent sur des questions aussi diverses que les contraintes de travail des employés, les distinctions sociales et « ethniques » au sein des établissements, la dimension émotionnelle des soins ou le type d’échanges survenant entre résidents et professionnels. Cet article propose une revue de cette littérature. Après avoir donné quelques clés pour la lecture de ces textes, il présente les grandes orientations de recherche recensées, à partir de travaux particulièrement illustratifs. Il conclut par quelques remarques concernant les spécificités de la recherche francophone et anglophone en la matière et souligne les enjeux contemporains de l’étude des institutions d’hébergement pour personnes âgées à l’échelle internationale.
