Abstract
This paper examines changes in residential density near the Sheppard Subway Line in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from 2001 to 2011. The Sheppard Subway Line opened in 2002 and is the most recent metro expansion in the city of Toronto. The relationship between the subway and changes in residential density is investigated using two methods: (1) the numerical relationship between changes in walking and subway accessibility provided by the opening of the line and changes in residential density and (2) a quasi-experimental analysis of the changes in residential density in the station pedestrian catchment areas (PCA) and controls. A weak quantitative relationship between accessibility and residential density is found and the station PCAs saw faster densification than the controls in most cases.
