Abstract
This study presents an initial interpretation of the evolution of social inequalities in health in Québec using an individual measure of social situation. It draws on two general health surveys conducted in 1987 and 1998. The income variable is selected as an indicator of social situation while a connection is established between three general health indicators— health perceived as average or poor, a high level of psychological distress and the presence of long-term activity limitations— and income. Three measures, that is, ratio of extremes, attributable risk and relative inequality index, are used to determine the temporal evolution of health disparities related to income. These measures reveal no significant change in social inequalities in health during the period studied. These results corroborate the conclusions of other ecological studies conducted in Québec and their importance for research and decision making in public health is finally addressed.
