Abstract
A sex shop on every corner was probably not what China's leaders had in mind when they embraced a market economy. Yet with hotpants standard summer attire and physical affection a common sight on the streets, even the capital Beijing is a million miles from the conservative city it once was. Because censorship is still tight, however, little sign of this sexual revolution has been seen on Chinese movie screens. It's taken an Australian filmmaker by the name of Sam Voutas to portray this change in China's first 'sex shop comedy', 'Red Light Revolution'. On the eve of the film's online release in China and theatrical runs in the UK and Canada, Dan Edwards spoke to Sam Voutas about his feature debut and the challenges of making and distributing a sex-themed movie in China.
