Abstract
La compétition sportive se fonde sur un double principe : un principe méritocratique et un principe de justice dont dépend le premier. Le rôle de l’arbitre est alors indispensable à l’élaboration d’une hiérarchie. Dans ces conditions, le sport se pose en modèle social et sociétal. Or, pour garantir l’efficacité de cette modélisation, l’institution sportive place l’arbitre au cœur de sa mission éthique : diffusion de valeurs morales, respect des valeurs sportives, pérennisation de la règle, délimitation de la violence socialement acceptable, etc. L’arbitre se trouve alors chargé de former les consciences à une éthique tout en préservant l’ordre compétitif. En tant que référent moral, l’arbitre assure une fonction éthique mais aussi politique ; à tel point qu’en France l’État reconnaît qu’il assure une mission de service public. Cette acceptation nous renseigne sur les fonctions éthiques que l’arbitre remplit au sein d’une société sportive dont il est le garant moral.
