Abstract
Mention the term 'mounted troopers', and the minds of most people conjure up images of wild adventure, dashing horsemen and valiant struggles against fearsome foes, the wilderness and the elements, be they mounted troopers of the Australian Light Horse in one of the world's last cavalry charges at Beersheba, Palestine during World War One, or the British Light Brigade so famous for their courageous, albeit hopeless, charge at Balaclava during the Crimean War: Likewise, the United States and Confederate States cavalry regiments during the American Civil War and later Indian Wars fought in the western states of the United States, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or the Northern Territory Mounted Police, the images are all the same: High adventure, great danger, and a romantic life style full of rugged characters and villains, where the main players are often portrayed to be larger than life itself.
