Abstract
Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Germany, among others, have all tried to create legal protections for freedom of expression while balancing this core liberty in a democratic society with other democratic values such as equality and human dignity. This essay argues that Americans, too, must surrender our false assumption that we are free to say whatever we want, whenever we want, to whomever we want, and that we must tolerate others doing the same. We live in an increasingly diverse and integrated society and must be willing to reasonably limit the freedoms we enjoy to allow a large and diverse population to live together in a more respectful, equalized, and civilized manner.
