Abstract
Solution-focused counseling (SFC) is one of many approaches widely practiced in Canada. This chapter presents a case where SFC was used with a Canadian-born woman of Punjabi Asian Indian descent, who presented with academic difficulties. It describes the client, Kamalpreet, focusing on her background, salient aspects of her developmental history, and the issues that led her to seek counseling. The chapter sequences and discusses her counseling process and outcomes, concluding with highlights on the key aspects of the case and therapeutic process. The counselor's exploration of Kamalpreet's cultural identity is consistent with the SFC framework, which emphasizes accepting and working within the client's individual customs and values. His approach of letting the client define the goals and direction of counseling, as well as his choice to defer to Kamalpreet's own solutions, helped to alleviate her discomfort with the gender dynamic and facilitated a strong working alliance.
