Abstract
Community unionism stands for all the work that unions do in alliance with the community. There are four ways that the term community unionism can be used to describe the links between unions and the community. They are: instrumental where the union goes to community organisations for help on its issues, identifying common issues of discrimination, recreating a social movement by joining unions and community in joint struggle, and finally transformative in which both the union and community are changed by their collaboration. This paper presents two Canadian experiences with community unionism, specifically, examples of trade union and community alliance around job creation, and explores their relevance for Australia.
