Aussi bien au Québec qu’en France, la structure démographique de la main-d’oeuvre se transforme, alors même que se produisent d’importantes mutations dans l’organisation des entreprises. Or l’évolution des conditions de travail pourrait mettre en difficulté des salariés vieillissants, de plus en plus nombreux. Le présent article rassemble et commente les résultats de recherches menées dans les deux pays ces dernières années, faisant appel à des disciplines diverses (principalement la sociologie, l’ergonomie et l’épidémiologie). Ce texte décrit d’abord les principales évolutions constatées dans la démographie des entreprises et dans les caractéristiques dominantes du monde du travail. Un modèle de compréhension des relations entre l’âge, la santé, et les nouvelles formes d’organisation du travail est ensuite proposé, modèle fondé sur la plus ou moins bonne compatibilité entre les exigences du travail et les marges de manoeuvre individuelles et collectives que les travailleurs peuvent élaborer au fil de l’âge et du parcours professionnel. À titre d’illustration, on examine enfin les résultats de cette démarche d’analyse dans deux domaines particuliers: les horaires atypiques et la précarité d’emploi
