Sommaire La Turquie a officiellement obtenu le statut de pays candidat à l’adhésion à l’Union européenne en décembre 1999. Malgré des accords de longue date liant ce pays à l’Union, la perspective de son éventuelle adhésion continue de susciter des débats passionnés tant dans la classe politique qu’au niveau de l’opinion publique en Europe. Les opposants à l’adhésion de la Turquie font valoir des arguments d’ordre économique, culturel mais aussi des objections liées au non-respect par ce pays des principes démocratiques fondamentaux. L’article porte sur les progrès accomplis par la Turquie en matière de respect des droits humains et des droits des minorités depuis la fin des années 1990. Il explore le rôle joué par l’UE dans le processus de démocratisation. L’évolution des relations entre la Turquie et l’Union depuis l’ouverture des négociations d’adhésion le 3 octobre 2005 est également examinée.
